The Skinny

The Spring Grove Lions are making their third state tournament appearance, but first since 2011. The Tigers of Nevis return for the first time since 2012 and are making their fifth state tournament appearance.

Spring Grove rushed for 3,269 yards this season. Junior quarterback Alex Folz led the Lions with 1,471 yards on 224 rush attempts, which was good for 25 touchdowns. Folz also completed 141 of 231 pass attempts for 2,103 yards and an additional 25 touchdowns. Junior Noah Elton was Folz’ favorite target; he had 49 receptions for 812 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior Cullen Patterson added 1,195 rushing yards on 133 attempts for 16 touchdowns. Taylor Holly, a senior, led Spring Grove’s defense with 141 total tackles. Spring Grove averages 45.7 points per game while holding its opponents to 16.8 points per game.

Nevis prefers to keep the ball on the ground, accumulating 2,789 rushing yards this year. Senior quarterback Jack DeWulf completed 53 of 100 passing attempts for 813 yards and 14 touchdowns. DeWulf also rushed for 819 yards on 139 carries and tallied 11 touchdowns. Senior Kyle Schmidt led the running game with 955 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jack Landquist, a senior, paced Nevis’ defense with 100 tackles. Senior Tucker Roehl and Schmidt each had two interceptions for the Tigers during the regular season. Nevis averages 30.5 points per game while holding opponents to 12.0 points per game.
