MSHSL hires new Associate Director

By Tim Leighton, MSHSL
Brookyn Center

The Minnesota State High School School League’s Board of Directors today formally approved the hiring of Bob Madison as an associate director. Madison, a longtime coach and educator, is completing his 15th year as the activities director at Mounds View High School, and 25th year in the Mounds View School District.

“I am honored and humbled to serve the member schools of the Minnesota State High School League, the activities directors, the coaches and the students,” Madison said.

In his role with the League, Madison will oversee the activities of football, dance team, boys’ basketball, baseball, in addition to administrative roles with activities directors and coaches.

“Bob’s experience as an educational leader, a participant in the Why We Play initiative, a manager for League tournaments, and an active member of the Suburban East Conference, Region 5AA, and the MNIAAA will transition well to the responsibilities he will have as an associate director,” MSHSL Executive Director Dave Stead said. “He has a collaborative philosophy and a demonstrated interest in serving all MSHSL member schools, both large and small.  Bob will be a welcomed addition to the League staff.”

Madison, a 1987 graduate of Centennial High School, earned an Elementary Education degree from Bethel University in 1991. At Bethel, he was a four-year letter winner on the Royals’ men’s hockey team and served as captain his senior year.

In addition to teaching at the elementary school level in the Mounds View School District, Madison coached girls’ hockey at Irondale High School for six years and was an assistant boys’ hockey coach at Mounds View for two seasons. He earned his Master’s Degree from St. Mary’s University in 2000.

His wife, Shannon, is an assistant principal at Coon Rapids High School. They have two sons: R.J. (8) and Logan (7). In his spare time, Madison enjoys fishing and golf.

“I have always been an educational leader and hope to continue to do so with the Minnesota State High School League,” Madison said.

Madison becomes just the 13th associate director in the 101-year history of the Minnesota State High School League. He is replacing Associate Director Kevin Merkle, who is retiring after 17 years of service to the member schools of the MSHSL. Madison begins his role with the League on July 27.
